UK METEOR UPDATE; Gloucestershire, England, March 7, 2021

Newly released images taken in Scotland and Bedfordshire confirm that something unusual happened in the sky over England one hour prior to the UK meteor explosion on Feb 28, 2021.

The striking image at the top of this article was taken in The Reddings, Cheltenham, at around 8.43pm on Sunday.

This was about an hour and a quarter before the fireball meteor was seen and heard in the county.

The strange formation was photographed by James Parfitt who said: "There I was just putting the rubbish in the bin, looked up and saw this amazing phenomenon.

“At first I thought it was an unusual cloud, but noticed the rest of the sky was completely clear.

“It looked very strange."

Even though the photograph was taken around 75 minutes before the meteor, James said there were similarities.

He said: “If you look at other photos from past meteor showers it looks identical, so perhaps there were more earlier?

“It’s too much of a coincidence to not be related.”

The picture was taken in his garden, looking east towards the Asda supermarket, Cheltenham and ultimately the Cotswolds where the later meteor is thought to have landed.

Many were disturbed by what was described as a ‘sonic boom’ as the meteor entered the Earth’s atmosphere - including people living in Bishop's Cleeve.

The meteor is understood to have landed somewhere between Swindon Village and Bourton-on-the-Hill, according to the network.

Since this article was originally published, we have been contacted by people from Gloucestershire, England and Scotland.

There have been sightings of similar formations in Highleadon, near Newent, and in Glenrothes, Fife, and you can see these images above.

There has also been interest in the apparitions across in the United States, with the Montana Sky Watcher group linking to our story, with comments showing other sky phenomenon.

While the image above was sent to us by Simon J Fletcher, who took it at 9.06pm on Sunday in Hatherley looking towards Dean Close School.

He said: "The same blue shape appears as in the photo taken by James Parfitt 20 minutes or so earlier than mine."

We have also heard from another person mystified by odd apparitions in the sky.

Jade Casey, who lives in Hockliffe, Bedfordshire, noticed what she described as an unusual ‘cloud’ cutting across the sky, right in front of the moon's glare as she drove home.

She said: "I kept looking at it throughout the 10 minute journey home.

"First of all I thought it might be a long lasting condensation trail but I soon dismissed this idea because for one it was 9pm and I’ve never seen one so late into the evening and two the colouration of the trail had a grey/black ting to it and the width of the trail was larger than anything I’d seen before.

It was very prominent and stood out against the darkness of the night sky.

"Anyway when I got home I took a couple of photos and a video of this strange trail. The quality is not the best due to the motion setting being on my camera. The trail looked like it went on for miles.

"My husband did say to me today check the photo time stamp as it might of been the trail of the meteor but I dismissed it because obviously it was a day before. "
